They were used beside the kang which was a raised platform used as a bed or lounging area. Kangs were quite often made from stone which was heated from underneath in the winter. The two painted male children are a motif commonly found in China & Mongolia often referred to as the '100 boys' motif. They were auspicious symbols to bring agricultural prosperity.
